It’s that time of the year where we start compiling our annual New Year’s Resolutions List, specifically for the workplace. With the best intentions of following through on those promises, we know in the back of our minds that we’ll most likely only reach week two before falling off the band wagon. If you’re like 95% of the population who fall into that category, take a deep breath, have peace of mind that we understand what it feels like to fall back into old habits, and consider implementing the following 5 New Year’s Resolutions to make 2016 even more productive and successful:
5. Give yourself a break: We know it’s the beginning of a new year with new challenges, but don’t be too hard on yourself to be excellent from the get-go. It’s difficult enough getting into the flow of things, especially after enjoying a good heartfelt Christmas dinner with the people you love, and celebrating new beginnings with sparkly drinks and fireworks. So ease into things to avoid burnout by July, and realise that you’re human. You will make mistakes, which you will do your best to fix. Also, there are enough people out there who’d enjoy watching you fall, so don’t be your own worst enemy.
4. Pay attention to your colleagues: Whether you’re high up in the command chain, or part of the foundation, spend time getting to know the people you work with. By treating each other with respect and compassion, not only do you get to know one another’s strengths and weaknesses, but your work environment becomes a lot more pleasant. Which in return creates happier employees and ultimately even happier clients.
3. Invest in a Project Management Course: Planning, delegating and monitoring is essential for making any project within a work environment run smoothly. Without the basic know-how, you’re pretty much wasting your time and valuable resources trying to build a successful business. Our PRINCE2 and Project Management Essentials Course are hands-on, 2 day, basic know-how course designed specifically for a New Year’s Resolution item-when budgets are a little tight and time is short.
2. Set yourself weekly goals: That way you’ll stay focussed, not feel overwhelmed most days, and have a sense of accomplishment and the end of the week. Nothing gets you down faster if you’re go-getter than feeling stagnant and unaccomplished. Besides, there’s no better feeling than starting fresh on a Monday.
1. Stay committed: That’s easier said than done. However, in order to be successful, you have to push through and commit to something. Whether it’s a difficult project, a picky client, or a New Year’s Resolution. At the end of the day, the rewards will be so much greater than the amount of pressure and hurdles you need to overcome.
